Orlando to Cape Canaveral: $65.98 and a $16.77 Tip
58 miles. One hour, five minutes. A rocket launch. And the best Uber ride they said they had ever had.
Long rides scare a lot of drivers. An hour with strangers feels like a lot of pressure to be entertaining. It is not. A long ride is the easiest tip you will ever earn, as long as you treat it like a shared trip instead of a transaction.
This one was a couple headed to Cape Canaveral to watch a launch. 58 miles, an hour and five minutes, and a clear sky. The fare came to $65.98. The tip came to $16.77. Here is how the ride actually went.
Set the tone, then let it breathe
In the first minute I confirmed the route, asked if they had a preferred way out of the city, and told them they were welcome to relax because I knew the drive well. That last line does more work than it looks like. It tells the rider they are in good hands, which means they stop monitoring the road and start enjoying the trip.
Then I went quiet and let them lead. They were excited about the launch, so I asked one question about it, and that was the whole conversation for the next forty minutes. I added a little, mostly I listened.
On a long ride your job is not to talk. It is to make the time feel short.
The small touches that close the tip
I had cold water in the door. I kept the cabin a couple degrees cooler than usual because the morning was already warm. When we got close, I pointed out the best spot to see the pad from the road. None of it is expensive. All of it signals care.
They told me it was the best Uber ride they had ever had. The $16.77 tip followed. On a per-hour basis that ride paid me roughly $61 an hour with the tip included, on a trip most drivers would have spent dreading the drive back.
